The AINO brand, created by Finnish designer Liisa Kotilainen, is on a mission to bring joie de vivre into the everyday lives of grown women in Northern Europe.
The AINO brand is designed for women on the go who want to keep looking elegant no matter how long their day.
In Liisa's way of thinking, clothing is designed to fit the woman and not vice versa; women cannot be required to alter their bodies and being to suit their clothes.
"I want my designs to cater for the Nordic woman, the independence of her lifestyle and her personal beauty," Liisa says.
The label is never on prominent display in AINO clothing.
"I dislike the idea of a piece of clothing being immediately identifiable as a given brand. It shifts the spotlight from the wearer to the designer. I believe the garment should be anonymous and let the woman shine instead," Liisa explains.
Today, collections under the AINO brand mainly feature overcoats and jackets.
Liisa is well acquainted with many of the customers who frequent her flagship store at Fredrikinkatu 33 in Helsinki. They are career women, well educated and active in various spheres of life; professional women whose wardrobes must serve a wide range of needs.
Design and business at AINO is built on the foundation of Liisa's uncompromising ecological approach. The production of beautiful clothing must be accomplished in a manner that puts a minimal burden on the environment. Secondly, the clothes must feature classic and enduring design that gives them a life span of years rather than months. |
In Nordic design, everything begins with functionality. Beauty arises when a functional product is given crisp and classic form. |
Timelessness is environmentally friendly. AINO pieces are produced with minimal adverse environmental impacts. Since the clothing is designed to last, AINO's materials of choice are natural fibers of superior quality, such as fine merino wool, linen and cotton.
The designs need to exhibit the same timelessness and longevity as the fabrics. Balance between form and material is an overriding concern. Working with high-quality fabrics calls for exceptional design skills.
The collections under the AINO brand are designed for actual women of different sizes and shapes, not just the tall and thin model types. Accordingly, most AINO pieces are available in sizes from XS up to XXL.
